ASML Korea just widened the industry boundary of its talent search
ASML Korea said on Aug. 27 that it plans to hire more than 100 people in the second half of 2026 across new-graduate and experienced positions. The notable signal is in experienced hiring: core engineering roles such as UIR, FSE, TSE and FAE will consider engineers not only from semiconductors but also from advanced and precision manufacturing.
That is more specific than saying the chip industry has a talent shortage. The company may value the work itself—equipment installation, maintenance, upgrades, technical support and field problem-solving—more broadly than the industry label on a candidate’s résumé.
Korea is adding semiconductor jobs while the capability mix is changing
Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor and related agencies forecast semiconductor employment to increase in the second half of 2026, one of only two major manufacturing sectors expected to post year-on-year job growth.
JobKorea data reported in July showed entry-level semiconductor postings up 47% year on year in the first half. As the entry gate expands, the experienced-hire question becomes more nuanced: which adjacent backgrounds can employers realistically accept?
Samsung is bringing AI and data expertise into semiconductor operations
On Aug. 14, Samsung Electronics recruited specialists in deep-learning and vision AI and in data engineering for its semiconductor business. The company said it plans to expand AI across chip design, process technology and manufacturing.
The signal points in the same direction. Semiconductor talent competition is spreading beyond traditional process, device and circuit roles into AI models, data infrastructure and productivity improvement.
The key question becomes: has the person solved the same kind of problem?
Adjacent experience is not interchangeable with semiconductor experience. Cleanroom rules, process knowledge, equipment specifics, safety, quality and customer environments can remain non-negotiable.
But the search boundary can widen around transferable units: precision-equipment installation and maintenance, complex manufacturing troubleshooting, automation operations, field applications, large-scale manufacturing data, or AI-driven process and quality improvement.
This matters for international companies hiring in Korea
A foreign company entering or scaling in Korea can make its candidate pool unnecessarily small by insisting on identical-industry backgrounds for every requirement. Experienced people may also be difficult to observe through inbound applications alone.
The practical task is not to lower standards. It is to separate experience that truly requires the same industry from capabilities that can be evidenced in adjacent industries, then design the search around that distinction. ASML Korea’s hiring expansion is a public example of that boundary moving.
The next signal to watch is not only hiring volume, but how far adjacent experience is accepted
Headline hiring numbers do not tell us where talent can actually move. The stronger signal is in job requirements: which industries are accepted, which capabilities recur, and whether employers begin searching talent pools they previously ignored.
ASML’s move toward precision-manufacturing backgrounds and Samsung’s recruitment of AI and data specialists are different cases, but they share one message: when technology boundaries move, talent-market boundaries can move with them.

The next semiconductor talent battle may be about finding transferable capability, not just semiconductor pedigrees
ASML Korea’s willingness to consider advanced and precision manufacturing backgrounds is a concrete public example of adjacent experience entering the hiring boundary. Samsung’s AI and data recruiting shows another direction of capability inflow.
Adjacent experience ≠ equivalent qualification. Transferability still has to be tested against the role’s actual non-negotiable requirements and evidence.
