POSCO created more than a new AI role
POSCO Group opened its second-half recruitment on September 3. Six companies are participating: POSCO Holdings' Future Technology Research Institute, POSCO, POSCO International, POSCO E&C, POSCO DX and RIST. The group plans a triple-digit number of entry-level hires across more than 60 functions including production and facility engineering, sales and marketing, safety and health, and AI.
The technology boundary is especially visible. The Future Technology Research Institute is recruiting researchers in robot perception and control, while POSCO and POSCO DX are expanding hiring for people who can drive AI transformation across manufacturing sites and office work. POSCO also created a new AI Engineer role for this recruitment cycle.
But one change is just as interesting as the new job title: POSCO changed the questions it asks applicants in the first place.
The application moves from standardized essays toward what candidates actually did
According to POSCO Group's official announcement, POSCO removed standardized self-introduction questions and introduced a new section for activities inside and outside school. Applicants can use it to describe the experiences and activities through which they built job-relevant capabilities.
The company says the purpose is to verify capability related to the job more effectively. Compared with recurring prompts about motivation, personal growth or strengths and weaknesses, the revised format gives more room to what candidates have actually experienced and learned in preparation for the role.
It is important not to overstate the cause. POSCO did not say that generative AI directly caused the redesign. Still, in a market where anyone can polish prose quickly, a shift toward more direct evidence of experience and job capability is a hiring signal worth watching.
The better AI becomes at writing, the harder it is to use writing quality as a differentiator
Generative AI can now organize a candidate's story, improve phrasing, insert job-relevant vocabulary and connect personal experience to a company's stated values at very low cost.
That does not make AI-assisted writing illegitimate. The issue is that when many applicants can produce similarly polished text, prose quality by itself carries less information about differences in actual capability.
Evaluation may therefore move one layer down: what project the candidate worked on, what they personally owned, what failed, how they fixed it, and what changed as a result. These are details that can be revisited in interviews and compared with other evidence.
Why a new AI Engineer role and a stronger focus on experience can appear at the same time
POSCO's new AI Engineer role is not simply an expansion of generic IT staffing. The group has been emphasizing Intelligent Factory deployment, robotization of high-risk manual work, and AI use in office functions as part of its 2026 direction.
POSCO DX has also positioned Physical AI and Agentic AI as two major pillars of its AI Native Company strategy. In manufacturing, it is pursuing an Intelligent Factory in which people, AI, equipment and robots work together, while combining robot simulation and control technology with AI models for industrial robotics.
In that environment, saying that one 'knows AI' is weaker than showing how one has used data, models, systems or automation to change a real process. The closer AI gets to factories and operating workflows, the more important the context of experience becomes.
For entry-level applicants, experience does not mean years of full-time employment
This is entry-level recruitment, so experience should not be confused with years of professional tenure. For a new graduate, evidence can come from coursework, research, internships, clubs, competitions, capstone projects or personal development work.
What matters is not only the name of the activity but what the applicant actually did inside it. Two candidates may list the same type of project; one may provide only a title, while the other can explain the problem, personal responsibility, decisions, implementation and validation.
Competition may therefore shift from 'who has experience' to 'who can extract the clearest job-relevant evidence from the experience they do have.'
Candidates need clearer evidence, not more decorative prose
Using AI to improve a cover letter is not the same as inventing experience. If AI lowers the cost of writing, applicants can spend more effort structuring the underlying facts.
Instead of writing only 'I completed an AI project,' a candidate can specify the data used, what they personally built, what failure occurred, how they addressed it and what changed in performance or workflow. In production and facility roles, the same logic applies to before-and-after conditions, scope of responsibility and the evidence behind technical decisions.
Employers face the same challenge from the other side. Rather than selecting the most polished narratives, they can define the experiences that actually reduce hiring risk and verify the same evidence consistently across application and interview stages.
The cover letter may not disappear — its job may change
One POSCO redesign does not mean standardized essays will disappear across Korean employers. Companies use different assessment systems, and narrative questions can still reveal motivation and judgment.
But this case shows a direction worth watching. On one side, the group is creating AI roles and recruiting robotics talent. On the other, POSCO is reducing standardized application questions and giving more space to actual activities and job-related capability.
As AI makes applicants' writing more similar, the scarce signal may become what existed behind the prose. In hiring, the premium may shift from a well-written experience to an experience that remains credible even when the question is changed.

If AI equalizes writing, hiring may move back toward evidence of experience
POSCO created an AI Engineer role while also removing standardized cover-letter questions and redesigning the application around actual activities and job capability. The two changes are separate policies, but their coexistence is revealing.
As generative AI makes polished writing easier to produce, employers may need more granular evidence: scope of responsibility rather than project names, real problems rather than keywords, and what was actually done rather than what a candidate says they can do.
Candidates face the same shift. The stronger strategy is not simply to make a cover letter more impressive, but to connect real experience to the job and make clear what can actually be verified.
In the AI era, the scarce asset may not be good writing. It may be real experience that still stands when the writing is stripped away.
