Do you have to come from a semiconductor company to move into JASM?

JASM in Kumamoto already has its first fab in volume production and is building a second. TSMC says the first Kumamoto specialty-technology fab began volume production at the end of 2024 and that it plans to use 3nm technology at JASM’s second fab, now under construction, to meet AI-driven demand.

The current careers list therefore spans far more than one type of semiconductor engineer. Alongside Fab23 Process Engineer and Equipment Engineer openings, JASM is also recruiting in Intelligent Manufacturing, AMHS software, quality and reliability, yield, safety, risk and HR-related functions.

But a broad job list does not prove that people from other industries can freely move into semiconductor manufacturing. The useful question is narrower: for each role, is semiconductor experience a minimum requirement, a preference, or one of several ways to show that the candidate has already solved a similar operating problem?

Intelligent Manufacturing is not closed to one academic or industry background

JASM’s MFG Intelligent Manufacturing Engineer opening, dated September 4, 2026, lists bachelor’s-level backgrounds including Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing, Production Engineering, Industrial Management, Computer Science, Mechanical and Automation Engineering or related fields. It also asks for knowledge of optimization algorithms, IE, IT or related areas.

The important line for career-transfer analysis appears under Preferred Qualifications: ‘Experience or knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing is a plus.’ Semiconductor manufacturing experience is useful, but the minimum qualification is not written as a semiconductor-company pedigree requirement.

The responsibilities also point to the underlying problem. The role helps production tools and product dispatching support fab wafer-output targets and works with engineering teams so robotic workstations, detection instruments and database/informatics tools meet operational goals. Someone from manufacturing systems, industrial engineering, production optimization or automation can therefore compare concrete problem evidence instead of stopping at the label ‘non-semiconductor background.’

AMHS Software draws the boundary even more explicitly — including LCD and robotics

The AMHS Software Engineer opening dated September 8 is more explicit. AMHS is the automated material-handling layer that moves wafers and materials through a fab. JASM says the role collects production-line transfer requirements, constructs a new AMHS, creates and monitors performance KPIs, troubleshoots reliability, handles system integration and improves production-line automation.

Preferred academic fields include Computer Science, MIS, Transportation Management and Industrial Engineering. The experience line then names transportation systems in Semiconductor, DRAM, LCD and Robotic fields, followed by ‘Green hands are also welcome.’

That makes the transferable problem easier to see. A person may not have worked inside a semiconductor fab but may have evidence from automated warehouses, AMR or AGV systems, manufacturing logistics, industrial automation, MES/WMS integration or equipment-data systems. That does not make LCD or robotics experience equivalent to JASM qualification. It means JASM itself defines a problem boundary that extends beyond one industry label.

In quality, chemical manufacturing and supplier quality appear before semiconductor experience

The current Incoming Material Quality and Reliability Engineer opening manages incoming-material quality and technology, supplier and material evaluation, supplier audits, process-change control, excursion prevention and variation reduction.

Its minimum qualifications include a materials or chemistry-related degree, prior experience in the chemical manufacturing industry or chemical synthesis, filtration and purification, and prior supplier quality or technology-management experience. Semiconductor manufacturing or engineering experience appears under Preferred Qualifications as a plus.

For a professional from chemicals or materials, that distinction matters. Experience in raw-material quality, supplier audits, qualification, change control and defect prevention can be directly relevant to the operating problem even when the previous employer was not a chipmaker.

The wrong conclusion would be: ‘Semiconductor experience does not matter at JASM’

JASM’s current job list also includes Fab23 Process Engineer and Equipment Engineer openings. Roles that develop and sustain process conditions, set up equipment or directly own yield and productivity can have a very different semiconductor-specific knowledge boundary from Intelligent Manufacturing, AMHS or incoming-material quality.

The three openings examined here therefore do not prove that JASM broadly prefers non-semiconductor candidates or that industry experience is becoming unimportant. Language requirements, work schedules, training requirements and domain-specific technical expectations still vary by role.

Posting dates also require caution. A current listing date does not tell us when a capability first became important. The same requisition can be reopened or remain active for a long period. This article is a snapshot of the experience boundaries visible in public openings as of September 10, 2026, not a claim that these capabilities suddenly appeared this month.

For candidates, the better translation starts with the problem already solved

The easiest way to describe a career is by industry: automotive, chemicals, logistics automation, electronics. But selected JASM openings make it useful to decompose that history into smaller operating problems.

A manufacturing or smart-factory candidate can ask how much evidence they have in dispatching, production-flow optimization, equipment automation and data analysis. An automated-logistics candidate can show throughput, reliability, integration and troubleshooting in AMHS, AMR, AGV, WMS or WCS environments. A chemical or materials-quality candidate can point to supplier audits, material qualification, process-change control and variation reduction.

This is not a way to inflate adjacent experience. It is stricter than saying ‘my skills are transferable.’ The candidate has to match the actual problem in the job description to evidence from previous work, while also identifying the semiconductor-specific knowledge that is still missing.

For selected JASM roles, ‘Have you solved this problem before?’ can be a better first question than ‘Are you from semiconductors?’

JASM’s current Intelligent Manufacturing opening accepts a broad manufacturing and engineering background and treats semiconductor manufacturing experience as a plus. Its AMHS role explicitly includes LCD and robotics transportation-system experience, while incoming-material quality directly asks for chemical-manufacturing and supplier-quality experience.

This does not mean semiconductor experience is unimportant. Process and Equipment roles can have much more semiconductor-native boundaries, and experience requirements differ within the same company.

The practical career question is therefore not only whether the previous industry label matches. It is how closely the operating problem JASM needs solved matches evidence from the candidate’s prior work — and what domain gap still remains.
